David Richardson, the International Cricket Council's (ICC) chief executive, believes that Chris Gayle's controversial comments during the Big Bash League 2015-16 will hardly affect cricket and that women's involvement in the sport is a massive plus for the game."Gayle comments in BBL could have been avoided. But I think cricket does not need to worry about it. Cricket can easily move on from here on without worrying," Richardson said on Monday (January 11). Gayle apologized and was subsequently fined 10,000 Australian dollars for comments viewed as inappropriate on live television."Of the viewership of ICC events, 40 percent of them are women and it is much higher when it comes to T20s. It is a strategy to engage women in the game more through T20. It is not about females watching the game but about world audience watching women play," Richardson said."I can say that worldwide more than one million women are playing and the quality of the game is also increasing day by day. In World Cup events, earlier England and Australia used to win; now we will find India, West Indies, South Africa winning events. Very proud of women's cricket and I hope it will increase day by day."

Clinical bowling helped Brisbane Heat restrict Sydney Sixers to 156, in their chase of 163 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday (January 10), to register their second victory in Big Bash League (BBL) 2015-16. However, the narrow six-run margin of victory meant the visitors remained at the bottom of the points table.Last year's runner-up, Sixers were facing bottom-placed Brisbane in a must-win clash to keep their campaign alive, but remained unsuccessful in front of a packed home crowd. Set to chase 163, Sydney had a shaky start, losing their opener Ed Cowan in the third over and No. 3 bat Nick Larkin in the eighth. The move to promote Sean Abbott up the order failed to click as the all-rounder was run out for 1, leaving the home team reeling at 50 for three.Michael Lumb and Brad Haddin took it upon themselves to reconstruct the chase. The duo played freely, adding 49 in a partnership that lasted 31 deliveries. Lumb was the first to depart of the two, yorked by Folors three short of a deserving fifty, leaving Sixers another 64 short of the target with 37 balls remaining.
Haddin got a reprieve when Mitchell Swepson grassed a dolly in the long-off region. The Sydney Sixers skipper picked a lucky boundary next as Lendl Simmons misjudged a catch that spilled and crossed the ropes. Third time unlucky, however, Haddin had to depart as Swepson mad amends with a stunning diving catch to his right to end his fireworks on 42.

It always nice to get two wickets (2-24). With time, he will get more mature as he gains experience. He is fit and strong. He looks to be a good prospect for India," Dhawan told reporters. After MS Dhoni opted to bat first in the T20, Dhawan showed signs of his old self, smashing three sixes and eight fours in his 46-ball knock of 74. Brisbane Heat's slim chances of making the semi-finals vanished in front of a record Gabba crowd as they lost by eight wickets to a near-perfect Adelaide Strikers on Friday (January 8). Strikers moved to the table by making short work of their target of 176, with each of their top three contributing breezy half centuries.Man of the match Mahela Jayawardena's silky strokes and deft touches were on display as he raced on to 20 from eight balls with a couple of sixes and a four in the second over. He pulled a muscle shortly after that early blitz and received some treatment, but that hardly slowed him down. The Sri Lankan brought up his second successive half-century in the 10th over before he was trapped in front of the stumps by Samuel Badree.Travis Head, who walked out next, raced to a 25-ball 50 before getting out in the 17th over. The in-form left-hander smashed four sixes and a four in his whirlwind knock. Opener Tim Ludeman remained unbeaten until the end on 57 with five boundaries.
Asked to bat first, Brisbane Heat lost their overseas star Lendl Simmons in the second over.

Australia's upcoming One-Day Internationals (ODI) campaign against India should be as feisty as ever, coach Darren Lehmann said on Friday (January 8), adding the dynamic would be a good challenge for his young squad.Asked about the mood of the five-match ODI series, which gets under way at Perth's WACA ground on Tuesday, Lehmann said he expected it would be "the same" as previous ones. They (India) are playing an aggressive brand of cricket as well so I don't see that changing over the next five games," he told reporters in Perth."India play the same way, so it's going to be an exciting series."Matches in the past have seen tempers flare, with umpires intervening in Adelaide in 2014 as players exchanged terse words and pointed fingers at each other. The Perth game will be the first time top-ranked Australia have faced India since beating them in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Sydney last March.Lehmann said he was sure his 13-man squad - including uncapped fast bowlers Scott Boland and Joel Paris - would handle the situation well given their experience with big crowds and the pressures of domestic T20 cricket."So they'll be used to that now, which is a good thing for us," he said.

Ian Chappell, the former Australian captain, weighed in on the Chris Gayle controversy, calling on Cricket Australia to take a zero-tolerance position against what he deemed as "totally inappropriate" behavior. The West Indian opener drew criticism from various quarters for asking Mel McLaughlin, a senior Big Bash League reporter, out for a drink during an on-field interview. Chappell said he wouldn't be surprised if Australia's cricket board suspended Gayle from participating in any form of organised cricket in the country. As Team India heads into the series comprising five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) against Australia, some former cricketers reckon that given the hosts' low bowling reserves, this could be India's opportunity to win the first-ever bilateral limited-overs series between the two sides.India have never featured in a bilateral limited-overs series Down Under and the lack of experience in the world champions' pace arsenal is a factor MS Dhoni's men would look to capitalize on. The recent experiment with the pink ball in Pakistan domestic cricket saw the players complain about the visibility of the ball under floodlights. The major concern, they said, was the quality of the ball once it got older, as it didn't hold up well for both batting and fielding. The PCB tested the pink ball in the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan's premier first-class tournament, played in Karachi this week between United Bank Limited, led by Younis Khan, and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, captained by Misbah-ul-Haq. No batsman could score a hundred, but the fast bowlers had a more productive stint - they took 27 of the 34 wickets, with Bilawal Bhatti finishing with match figures of 11 for 95, including 8 for 56 in the third innings of the match. The ball used in the match was not the up-to-date version of the Kookaburra, which is a more workable ball for day-night Tests, and was used in the first ever day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand last month.
Here's what the Pakistani players said about the use of the pink ball in the QEA final:
Azhar Ali, Pakistan ODI captain and SNGPL middle-order batsman
"I am not fully comfortable yet but I'm open to more experiments in future. It was a completely new experience for us but overall it went well with some concerns in visibility. I feel with the cleaner environment, like we saw in Australia, it would be great as in winters here it's more hazy."There was basically some difficulty in the visibility after sunset but it was better with the ball being new. However, as soon as the ball got older, we found it difficult to see it. It also swung more than usual in the night. So as soon it's used the floodlights, especially during dusk, you really have to focus hard. As a fielder it's hard to see the ball from square of the wicket and sometimes it's a complete miss. Taking high catches was the other issue, as the older ball gets blurrier.

Andre Russell's 20-ball blitz of 42 wasn't enough to help Sydney Thunder avoid their third consecutive defeat as Perth Scorchers recorded a 30-run win to go top of the points table in the Big Bash League 2015-16 on Thursday (January 7).Chasing 176, Thunder had a poor start as they were down to 17 for 2. Shane Watson led a brief fightback but he too was dismissed inside the first 10 overs. Russell came out and displayed his trademark swagger and audacity, smashing five sixes in his brief stay. However, the onus of carrying Thunder through from an early stage in the chase was too much for the West Indian to handle. His dismissal kick-started a middle-order procession as Thunder went from 97 for 5 in the 14th over to finishing 145 for 9 in their quota of 20 overs.

Over the course of one tour of Zimbabwe and a return series on neutral ground, Afghanistan have notched up a number of firsts: ODI and T20 series wins over a Test-playing opponent, and now a place in the top ten of the ODI ranking list. At the start of the T20 series, they will be full of confidence. After all, they already sit ninth in the T20 rankings, a whole five places above Zimbabwe.During their tour of Zimbabwe, Afghanistan made a number of changes between the ODI and T20 series, bringing in specialists such as Usman Ghani and Gulbadin Naib. This time around they included Naib in their eleven for the final ODI - with spectacular results - and might make more changes still for the first T20I, with plenty of options in their 21-player squad.

Despite their dominance of the BBL over the years, Perth Scorchers have repeatedly been written off. After they slumped to 2 for 1 in the second over to a formidable Sydney Thunder attack, the Scorchers could probably hear the skepticism reverberating. However, once again, the defending champion's famed resilience reared and another finals appearance looks assured after a 30-run victory over the Thunder at Spotless Stadium in Sydney.Notching their fourth win of the BBL, the Scorchers pulled a game clear of the Thunder after both teams were deadlocked at second on the ladder.Largely due to contrasting, but highly effective, half centuries from precocious youngsters Cameron Bancroft and Ashton Agar, the Scorchers recovered from the perilous early position to compile 5 for 175 after being sent in to bat.It was a total the highly disciplined Scorchers attack always looked likely to defend. On television commentary, Mark Waugh rated Thunder paceman Andre Russell the "best fast bowler in the competition". Waugh may have a change of heart after Scorchers spearhead Jason Behrendorff (3 for 26 off 4 overs) again produced a scintillating display claiming the early wickets of Aiden Blizzard and the out-of-form Jacques Kallis to leave the Thunder reeling at 2 for 17 after three overs.

Stuart Broad, the England pacer, has been fined 30% of his match fee by International Cricket Council for twice asking Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar to 'just get on with the game' during the second Test against South Africa at Newlands. The incident happened when Broad had kicked the pitch in frustration during the 195th over of the South African 1st innings after Johny Bairstow dropped Temba Bavuma. That immediately prompted Dar to issue a warning. Bavuma who was batting on 77 at that time went on to complete his maiden Test century. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Bruce Oxenford, third umpire Rod Tucker as well as fourth umpire Shaun George. The player was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match," ICC said in a statement.

Ireland on Wednesday (January 6) accepted International Cricket Council's (ICC) invitation to replace Australia in the Under-19 World Cup 2016 in Bangladesh, starting on January 27. This comes a day after Australia pulled out of the tournament citing security concerns.Firstly, we are grateful to ICC for extending the invitation to us to participate in the tournament. Given the circumstances of the invitation, however, it was important that we used the brief time we had to investigate the safety and security situation in Bangladesh," Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland CEO, said in an official release. While we are fully aware of the heightened security risk in the country, all we can do is rely upon expert advice, which tells us that the tournament security plan appears very comprehensive an estimation supported by the independent assessments we have seen. Injured pacer Mitchell Starc revealed on Wednesday (January 6) that he is 'very unlikely' to be a part of Australia's World T20 campaign in March the only ICC trophy that has thus far eluded the current World Champions. The bowling hero of Australia's record fifth Would Cup triumph in 2015, Starc suffered a stress fracture in his right foot on the first day of the historic day-night Adelaide Test against New Zealand, in November 2015. Starc, who bagged the prestigious Player of the Tournament award at the ICC showpiece event for his 22-wicket haul, is yet to resume bowling since his trouble ankle gave in.Starc developed as many as three bone spurs on his left ankle. The growth was scraped out in a surgery, along with the removal of a chunk of bone from the back of the joint and scar tissue that built up over years of wear and tear.Despite the initial suggestions that the 25-year-old pacer might recover in time for the March event, Starc has disappointingly admitted that the scenario is now "very unlikely" as he remains unsure of when he would be able to make a comeback in competitive cricket.

"You can't manufacture opening batsman," Richards said. "They either like it or they don't like it and if you don't like it, its very hard to be successful at it."As an opening batsman himself, Richards would know. He would also be able to relate to why van Zyl felt compelled to try. "I can understand why Stiaan wants to bat there because there was no other place in the middle order," Richards said. Of the four players lined up for a joint media interaction ahead of the Indian team's departure to Australia, Mohammed Shami came across as the most badass. His was a restless, even mischievous, presence. The first few questions of the session didn't involve Shami, and he amused himself by either tugging at his already loosened necktie or leaning to his right to share a joke with Yadav. But he would soon be confronted with serious questions. There was the inevitable one about his knee injury which had kept him out of international cricket for nearly a year following the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
