Sydney Thunder succumb to third successive defeat

Andre Russell's 20-ball blitz of 42 wasn't enough to help Sydney Thunder avoid their third consecutive defeat as Perth Scorchers recorded a 30-run win to go top of the points table in the Big Bash League 2015-16 on Thursday (January 7).Chasing 176, Thunder had a poor start as they were down to 17 for 2. Shane Watson led a brief fightback but he too was dismissed inside the first 10 overs. Russell came out and displayed his trademark swagger and audacity, smashing five sixes in his brief stay. However, the onus of carrying Thunder through from an early stage in the chase was too much for the West Indian to handle. His dismissal kick-started a middle-order procession as Thunder went from 97 for 5 in the 14th over to finishing 145 for 9 in their quota of 20 overs.

Asked to bat first, Perth Scorchers lost Michael Klinger for a duck in the first over and Marcus Harris in the third. The first bit of comeback was led by Shaun Marsh and Cameron Bancroft before Ashton Agar's joined the party with a 34-ball 68, an essay that included five fours and four sixes, to post 175 for 5 in 20 overs. In the absence of Michael Hussey, Thunder's batting order lacked the conviction in chase and crumbled as the Scorchers put on an exceptional display on the field.
Brief scores: Perth Scorchers 175-5 in 20 overs (Cameron Bancroft 72, Ashton Agar 68; Andre Russell 2-31) beat Sydney Thunder 145-9 in 20 overs (Andre Russell 42; Jason Behrendorff 3-26) by 30 runs
